264 days until the new waste permit rules start in England on 22 July 2027.

How it works

One sequence, start to finish. You do the personal checks and the competence assessment. We do the paperwork and the dealing with the Environment Agency.

  1. Step 1

    Check which permit you need

Use the checker, or tell us about your work and we will confirm it.

  2. Step 2

    We review your details

We look at your business, your vehicles and who will hold the competence.

  3. Step 3

    You complete the personal checks

Identity, criminal record and tax checks, with our guidance at each step.

  4. Step 4

You or your nominated person pass the competence assessment

Technical competence is shown through the CIWM Controllers and Transporters (CaT) scheme. It can be held by the permit holder or a nominated person in the business.

  5. Step 5

We prepare and submit the application

We apply to the Environment Agency as your agent. Environment Agency fee: to be confirmed.

  6. Step 6

    We handle Environment Agency questions

If the agency asks for more information, we answer and keep you posted.

  7. Step 7

You receive the permit and our compliance pack

Advert wording, vehicle signage text, a driver number register and record-keeping templates. Your permit number must be shown in advertising and on your vehicles.

  8. Step 8

    We remind you before renewal

Permits last three years. We contact you before yours expires.

Permits cannot be transferred to another business. If you incorporate, change partners or sell the business, you will need a new permit.
